From the first pages of In the Time of Dragon Moon you know that this is not set in the real world. With the image of a dragon sweeping over a river and a girl cutting her hair short with a knife readers are brought into a fantastic world of magic, dragons, cultures, and drama.Janet Lee Carey is wonderful at spinning a tale of drama, romance and fun.

This book is quite long but one of the best books I have read. The story is from the point of view of a girl named Uma. She is half English and lives in a tribe of people called the Enuit people. She wants to become the healer of her tribe, but she cannot because she is a girl. As the story goes on Uma and her father, the healer, are captured by the English to heal the Queen of the land and make her be able to have another son. Several chapters into the book the royal family goes on a trip to a nearby island that the King’s extended family lives on. There Uma meets Jackrun Pendragon, cousin to the heir to the thrown. Uma had been told by her father to never trust the English, but when the crown prince suddenly dies she has no one other than Jackrun to turn to.

One of my favorite things about this book is the strong female character that Uma is. Uma constantly shows how strong she is by consistently standing up in the face of danger, mystery, sadness, and uncertainty. She goes through quite the ride in the story and is almost killed several times. She is determined and willing to do anything to keep her people alive.

Another great plus is the extensive world that it is set in. Janett Lee Carey could have not taken time with the world, but she did and we now get to experience it. You get to see the world through Uma’s eyes, showing you her religion, her culture and cultural differences between the people. From the formal Enuit greetings to chanting havnula while sneaking around to keeping time by the different moons of the year, people experience a world full of culture and life. I know I wished several times that it was real.

Honestly, this is really one of the best books I have read in a while. I read over half the book in one day! That is how great this book is. I absolutely loved In the Time of Dragon Moon and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantasy book to read.
